چکیده

The main objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that the phase of melatonin release with respect to the light-dark cycle mediates the effects of photoperiod on the reproductive response of the ewe. To test the phase hypothesis, we eliminated endogenous melatonin secretion by pinealectomy and then restored physiological levels of serum melatonin with rises of the same duration but a t different phases of the light-dark cycle (either a t night or in the middle of the day). Serum melatonin patterns were determined by radioirnmunoassay in samples taken hourly for 24 h. The reproductive state was monitored by measuring serum luteinizing hormone ( L H ) in ovariectomized ewes treated with constant-release estradiol implants. Infusion of a long-day pattern of melatonin was equally effective in maintaining reproductive suppression when given during the night or the middle of the day. LH remained low for approximately 150 days and then rose as ewes became refractory to the inhibitory melatonin signal. These results d o not support the phase hypothesis. Rather, they are consistent with the hypothesis that the duration of the nocturnal secretion of melatonin codes for day length.

Melatonin and the seasonal control of reproduction.

Many mammalian species from temperate latitudes exhibit seasonal variations in breeding activity which are controlled by the annual photoperiodic cycle. Photoperiodic information is conveyed through several neural relays from the retina to the pineal gland where the light signal is translated into a daily cycle of melatonin secretion: high at night, low in the day. The length of the nocturnal s...

Intermittent Photoperiod Schedule does not Influence Brain and Serum Melatonin and Selected Serum Antioxidant Enzymes Activity in Broiler Chickens

This study evaluated the effect of the intermittent light program on serum and brain melatonin concentrations, antioxidant enzyme activities, and homocysteine concentration in broiler chickens. A total of 60 one-day-old broiler chickens (Cobb 500) were distributed in three light-proof controlled rooms (20 chicks per room). All birds were reared in continuous light until 3 days of age. Then, chi...

P-169: Melatonin and Fertility

Background: Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It helps regulate other hormones and maintains the body’s daily rhythm, telling us when to fall asleep and when to wake up. Ever since we developed electricity and the lightbulb, we have been decreasing our body’s secretions of melatonin by being exposed to bright light after it is dark. Jet lag, shift work and poor v...

Does seasonal reproductive state affect the neuroendocrine response of the ewe to a long-day pattern of melatonin?

This study examined whether or not the reproductive response of female sheep to photoperiod varies with seasonal reproductive state. The specific objective was to test the hypothesis that the reproductive response to a long-day pattern of melatonin varies with the reproductive state of the ewe. The response examined was the synchronization of reproductive neuroendocrine induction (rise in serum...

The Effect of Melatonin on Pediatric Drug-Resistant Epilepsy; a Randomized Double Blind Clinical Trial

BackgroundAbout 15 to 40% of children with seizures are refractory to standard anti-epileptic drugs and for such patients, other treatments such as surgery and the ketogenic diet can reduce seizure frequency. Melatonin is a natural pineal gland hormone. The use of melatonin for controlling pediatric seizures is still controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of melatonin on seizure...
